Dixie County High School Dual Enrolled Students Access LCCC Online Resources

LCCC Board of Trustee member Ms. Kathryn McInnis joins Ms. Charlotte Lord's dual enrolled class in the high school media center. Librarian Ms. Vickie Lepore demonstrated to the students how to access Lake City Community College Library's electronic resources.

LCCC Librarian Ms. Vickie Lepore distributed the library bar codes that enabled students to access databases, full-text articles, and entire books online. Now students can access quality resources and do their research from home!

Ms. Lepore explained that using the databases to find peer-reviewed articles, (articles previewed by experts) is faster than using Google and Yahoo.

The lecture and demonstration was very short, and then Ms. Lepore asked the students to complete a Research Skills Activity and Plagiarism Tutorial.

After students explored such databases as Academic Search Complete, Oxford English Dictionary, and Opposing Viewpoints, they completed an evaluation form. This pre and post test measured their growth in knowledge about ebooks, unintentional plagiarism, and virtual reference service. Students also had an opportunity to express which parts of the presentation were still unclear.

On a lighter note, Ms. Lepore invited the students to the LCCC Library's next gaming event on Friday April 18th. This event is coordinated by the college students, and will offer Wii games, DDR, Singstar Pop, and Guitar Hero games. Students are encouraged to bring their own consoles and controllers.

If you have questions about accessing electronic resources or citing in MLA format, please email Ms. Lepore at leporev@lakecitycc.edu
